Feeling A Little Overwhelmed?

I happened to walk by the street art on a recent trip to NY and I loved it. Little did I know that in the not too distant future I would feel something very similar. Tomorrow I leave for a trip and will be gone for just over a month. The idea of packing for my fashion week tour makes me want to curl up in a ball and cry. I know it sounds terrible to dread a trip that is actually really awesome but I really like my life and it's hard to be away from home moving city and hotel every couple of weeks. But seriously, how will I fit all of the shoes, boots and coats required for this trip into one manageable suitcase? I have saved some room for my yoga mat and I swear I will practice as regularly as possible. I say that every time I travel but this time, I mean it!

A little Totem lovin'

We love the stackable Totem Cups, Bowls and Salt and Pepper shakers by designer Rob Southcott for Imm Living. They pay homage to the sculpting of Totem poles by the First Nation tribes of the Pacific Northwest. I see these whimsical pieces as a compliment to your breakfast table. Ace Hotel

Recently we had the pleasure of staying at Ace Hotel NY for the first time and I was completely blown away. I have to put Ace Hotel right up there at the top of my all time favorite list. Although very centrally located, when living in New York it was kind of an awkward location to where we lived in Brooklyn. It would have been a "destination" to go there for drinks or dinner. My only exposure to Ace was walking by on the way to my weekly Ayurvedic cooking classes at the New York Open Center ... but that's a different post! At that time, I would pop in for a peak at the bar and restaurant which is very cool but actually staying there was something special.

Yes the entryway, bar and restaurant are an example of interior design at it's finest and you can find plenty of pictures online but I mostly blown away by the thoughtful detail throughout the room. To me, it is all about the details and Ace Hotel just gets it right. This post is actually to give give props in equal parts to the vision of Ace Hotel and the unique design know how of Roman and Williams design firm. You can see their handwriting all over Ace Hotel. Robin Standefer of Roman and Williams says that their design aesthetic has a 'dreamy, subconscious force' and you definitely feel this at Ace Hotel. It appeals to you on a familiar level somewhat like deja vu. They are known for creating a mood with the use of texture and unique, usually up-cycled objects. I loved the vintage Polaroid camera in the room which definitely sparks that familiar feeling. I find that their work revolves heavily around the use of Black, whether it be the floors, walls, door frames or accessories. Always, deep and inky and the perfect backdrop for to this dreamlike mood. I am a huge fan of design that is thoughtful but not too serious. There were a few funny little messages around the room like the one seen under the towel rack. Overall, Ace Hotel is a unique experience and I can't wait to visit again!

Wolfum Table Linens

So this morning over my ritual of coffee and web surfing, I noticed one of my favorite designers featured on Design Milk which makes me so happy. Wolfum is one of my absolute favorite collections and it has been such a pleasure to work with owner/designer Annable Inganni. When launching a new shop, you really never know what is going to resonate with your customers. I knew I loved Wolfum but apparently Austin, TX does too! It's no surprise that the bold graphic prints sparked interest from many of our customers. Couple interesting design with the fact that all items are hand made in Los Angeles using Organic Cotton for napkins and FCS birch wood for the coasters and chargers, it was an instant hit. A Few Images from Around NYC

Last week I was in New York and wanted to share a couple pics from around the city. First things first, we stopped for brunch at Cafe Gitane. I have to be honest, it's not my favorite in terms of food but if you want to dazzle your eyes with a beautiful environment and even more beautiful people, head to the Jane Hotel for Cafe Gitane. Just from the image of the eggs, I think you can see it's almost like being in a dreamlike state while you are there. I LOVED seeing the chalk boards in front of El Quinto Pino, the sweetest little tapas bar in Chelsea. One shows the Mayan Calender and lets you know that there is still time to drink! Or better yet, creating jobs for lemon, basil and Gin. I have to give props to Ippudo... yes we waited for about 2 hours (which I hear is a spoof this season on Portlandia ) but it was so worth it! The vibe was so much fun and the food was amazing! We also stayed at the Ace Hotel and I have more pictures to come from this little gem. Ace, I gotta tell you is really something special. The week was super busy, but NYC is always a good time.

The beginning of a new year inevitably brings the opportunity to reflect on the past year and set intentions for the following.

In 2011, Nannie Inez was realized from the imagination, hard work, and vision of two people that just want to enjoy what we do for a living. 2011 was a year of many firsts for us.

1. We purchased the first product for our little shop.

2. We introduced ourselves as a pop up shop in Austin,TX.

3. We sold our first product.

4. We met our first customers.

5. We met some really awesome people that reside in our new home town.

We began our shop in arguably the worst economic climate of a generation. Many of the most respected and trusted people in our lives advised us to wait until things improved. While we understood the risks, we decided to take a chance, believing that the best opportunities can come during challenging times.

There were a few quite days in our little shop and we wondered whether we should have heeded the advice. But eventually, the word got out and people started to visit us and responded positively to our concept. Eventually we found out, that people agreed with us. We discovered that this little shop has a future and we are filled with gratitude for all of the people helping us realize our dream.

As we close the doors on our pop up shop in 2011, and plan the opening of a permanent shop in 2012, we look forward to many more firsts.

London Boxpark

One of the biggest obstacles to starting and running a small independent business is finding a reasonably priced, interesting retail space in a desirable location. On our recent trip to London we discovered an innovative way a small group of creative types are choosing to address this issue. The city has created Boxpark, the world's first pop-up mall, using train boxcars, in the East London area of Shoreditch. Stacked in twos and lined side by side the boxcars form shopping, eating, and social space for visitors. The space includes galleries, dining, and various recognizable retailers. Boxpark opened just over a month ago and will remain open for 5 years. On our visit one afternoon many people were exploring the shops, hanging out in the common areas, and lunching in the many restaurants.

Kudos to London for creating smart and fresh experiences from existing and reclaimed materials. This is exactly the vibe Nannie Inez would like to be a part of and hopes to find in our search for a permanent location here in Austin.

Boundary Hotel-For Design Lover's

Nannie Inez just returned from an inspiration and product search trip. This trip took us to London where we stayed in Shoreditch, our favorite area of London for design in both home and fashion. London is chock-a-block with lodging options, but for the lover of design, there is none better than the Boundary Hotel. Designed by Sir Terence Conran (architecture, furniture design, Conran shop, etc) this boutique hotel has only 17 rooms. Each room is different, but they all share furnishings, art, books, and various objects from some of the most notable contemporary designers (Eames, Corbusier, Hoffman, YBDs, etc). You can even request the room of your favorite designer! We stayed in the Bauhaus room and you may recognize some of these pieces. As always, they took good care of us and we hope they save us a room on our next trip!

My Favorite NYC Subway Art

So, I'm in New York this week for a little fashion gig and I was reminded of one of the things that I love most about the city subway. Now listen, I'm not suggesting that you run out with a Sharpie and deface public property (you can also use chewing gum)... but I LOVE seeing a hilarious 'makeover' applied to ads posted around NYC subway platforms.

Sometimes it's just a simple eye scrape, but a little work goes a long way.

Like, how funny is Brad with a good heavy eyebrow.

Or this poor grad with a blacked out tooth and mustache. The ad says, The Road to a Bright Future... well not with that tooth and stash!

It makes me a bit angry when people scribble on public property for no good reason, but to bring a smile to the face of a passerby or better yet a laugh... now that's good work. Thank you New York.

Bohemian Holiday Ornaments

In Texas, we rarely have cold weather and snow on Christmas would be nearly impossible. I have to admit that I'm just not that in to holiday decorating and usually have to force myself to a buy a small tree. With that said, I LOVE these straw ornaments. I can just imagine them casually decorating an Adobe in a place like Marfa. At this place you might also find lighted Agave flowers in place of a Christmas tree and there would definitely be hot Mexican Cocoa brewing in the kitchen.

Ok, so maybe that's not my life but I can to work on the cocoa and get busy with these ornaments.

Kristian Vedel Bird Collection

So the story goes that one spring day in Stockholm, designer Kristian Vedel noticed an officer holding traffic to let a family of birds cross the street. Not only is the story sweet but the birds are made to be a reflection of your mood. Made in natural Teak wood with heads that swivel, beak goes up if you are happy and beak down if you are sad. I like to think that in this image, Momma bird having a conversation with a baby bird.

Moroccan Boucherouite Rug

I have a thing for rugs and believe they are essential for bringing it all together in a room. When I started seeing these Boucherouite rugs, I had to go for it. Also known as 'Rag Rug' because it is hand woven and knotted from recycled material. Each piece is unique and has a very textured surface. Like New, Vintage Kroehler

About a year ago, I found this awesome vintage Kroelher chair while visiting a friend in Dallas. We were living in New York at the time and obviously didn't have the space or time to work on re-covering this guy. Sadly, it's been sitting at my parents house and then in storage for about a year. Finally, finally now that we live the good life in Austin, we have both space and time to work on creative projects.

Personally I am better at the 'demo' work where you can easily get in a zone and almost meditate while removing too many staples to count. My Numero Uno on the other hand is super meticulous and seeing him at a sewing machine is awesome and a little funny. We chose a vintage looking Maharam print and kept the original swivel base and I LOVE it! It is quite low but it reclines just slightly and is really comfortable.

Obviously I love a good Pop Up shop so when I heard By George would be hosting the lovely Ashley Bailey of The Byrd Collective, I had to check it out. Wowser, what a delight for the eyes.

These pillows from August Morgan have been on my target list for Nannie Inez from the very beginning. They are so playful, nostalgic and fun. I would love to know how Austin designer Kate Hersch finds these vintage needle point kits. I just found out that the pillows are hand stitched by fair trade collective groups of women in India and Haiti. What? How awesome is finding something really cool that also supports the growth of our fellow independent women.

Meticulously stitched with vibrant yarn and filled with lush down inserts, these pillows give a nod to the past but are my New favorite gem. Oh, and guess what... find them at Nannie Inez, good living!

Ok, this one is just for fun but it would be impossible to work so closely with the concept of 'Nannie Inez' and not constantly think of my Grandmother. We decided to tribute the store Nannie Inez to THE Nannie Inez because she embodied the act of Good Living. She cooked delicious 6 course dinners made with vegetables direct from her garden. Her home was always perfect and filled with beautiful turn of the century antiques. She was never to be seen looking less than perfect and of course she had a running appointment to have her hair 'did' every week. This lovely lady was an artist and spent countless hours trying to introduce me to the art of painting but sadly it never clicked. Our store is in tribute to the actual Nannie Inez seen here in the blue jacket. I believe this picture was taken in Colorado and that's my grandfather to the right, I'm the baby and that's one of my brothers Ryan or Ryan-y as he was known then. Oh and hell yeah folks that's my Dad in the cowboy hat. Funny thing is he's not a cowboy... not at all... but, that's just how we do it in 80's Texas. This is the only picture I have here with me in Austin of Nannie Inez, but it is a favorite. I love the smirk and the lean. She would be very happy to see this project of ours called Nannie Inez come to life.

I am in love with these hand woven baskets from Swaziland. Obviously I am a color lover and these little babies make me so happy. They arrived yesterday from Swaziland and it was like an early Christmas. Each basket is signed by the individual craftsman and they even smell like nature (grass and trees)! We have an assortment of sizes and each babe is unique. They would be great on a wall as a display or a pretty little jewelry catch-all.

The first time I laid eyes on products by this designer, my heart nearly stopped. As I've said before I never get tired of saying and/or feeling, "OMG, I love this so much I could scream". That phrase is partly the reason that we embarked on this adventure. I waited for the right time, when we had nearly all our ducks in a row before contacting this lovely British designer, Donna Wilson.

Flower Delight

I love these little independent flower shops around Paris. I don't know what it is about Parisian floral arrangement but it is amazing. In addition to arrangements, they always have beautiful buckets of flowers on display.

It's been really rainy in Paris the last couple of days. Lack of sunshine can really get under my skin but there is something kind of cool about the sky matching the architecture. Yesterday we moved over to this lovely place on Rue Du Rivoli. This location is mostly like sleeping 1 floor up from the center of time square but the morning here is something special. For just 1 more day I am loving the view of Hotel De Ville and hearing near silence apart from the fountains.

I am so excited about these rugs from Brooklyn-based Morris Etc. They are vintage Peruvian rugs and the colors are so vibrant and lovely. I am thrilled to have them at Nannie Inez. Now I have mentioned on here before that I love our new home but hate the carpet (photograph taken at home). Good thing the floors at our Pop Up shop are polished cement and these little babies will look amazing.

Sometimes I just can't believe that this is real. Really, even Madelelien Pridoux playing in the background. Is this real? Paris is filled with charm and character and even well, "characters".

It was from this window that I could waste an entire hour watching people. There is a boulangerie across the street and at 12, all of the kids from the local school were lined up outside to get their baguette for lunch. It was so sweet.

The best, best best part... rental bikes. Brilliant concept!!

404, My Favorite Moroccan Restaurant in Paris

I love Moroccan cuisine more than life itself. My trip to Paris would not be complete without a visit to 404. The cous cous is my favorite. The vibe is very cool, dimly lit with hanging lanterns and lots of burning candles. Subtle with heavy beats, Moroccan music plays in the background as you sip a delicious Mojito (yes, I know this is Cuban but they are great at 404).

The bathrooms are hidden behind elaborately carved archways. I tried to sneak a pic but there is a fine line between documenting an experience and being a total Touron. You definitely need a reservation but it is totally worth it. Chez Oscar is great too but 404 is my favorite!

I Love Love Love this time of year. Fall, it means crisp air and much needed relief from the heat. It means a change in wardrobe, scarves and lightweight jackets. But mostly I love that it is time for my semi annual trip to Paris. Yes, it is for work but I am so happy to be here.

I am here for Stella McCartney and I can't wait to see the new collection and work with clients. This season is particularly stressful as the trip comes the month prior to opening Nannie Inez, good living. BUT I think I can manage to enjoy the city, work hard for Stella and make sure that every thing is ready for Nannie Inez.

Yes, it is true, these cute little brasseries are literally on every corner. We arrived from the airport and headed straight out for a proper breakfast.

I have only limited personal time so I must get to it. I did cheat a bit with a post breakfast nap but it's on now Paris. Let's do this.

I am so ridiculously excited to announce that Nannie Inez, good living will be launching as a Pop Up shop for the months of November-December at Kick Pleat in Austin. Wendi is one of my favorite people and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to share her space.

I have known Wendi for some time from my previous life in the fashion world. When I moved to Austin, I connected with Wendi to gain her insight into the good life that is Austin, TX. We discussed my plan to open Nannie Inez, a design concept store, and the difficult time I was having finding the right space. Soooo, some months later... still on a location search, we decided to collaborate together with a Pop Up shop. Nannie Inez, good living is equal parts whimsical and Bohemian and I can't wait to mix our lovely little items in this beautiful space. Stay tuned for more details.

Eat Your Heart Out Brimfield. It's Round Top Antique Festival

It is that time of year... Round Top Antique Festival!! Firstly, Round Top is the sweetest little town with beautiful landscape (when we are not in a severe drought!). Somehow over the years it has become known for antiques and 4 times per year they go all out with vendors from across the country... and even the globe!

The antique festival stretches on for miles and you really never know what you are going to find. Sometimes oddities, a lot of Americana, some Hollywood Regency, and a bit of industrial. You really never know. As we say in Texas, it's just a crap shoot.

Now listen, it's hot. It's really hot! But it is so worth the visit. I love being there, seeing everything and smelling the occasional BBQ. We went on Sunday and I swear I kept dreaming that I could see a cold beer on the horizon but it was just a mirage. That's not to say that you can't find a cold one but go with water!

With Nannie Inez, good living Pop UP shop opening November 1, we need display cases and fixtures. There must be a lot of retailers with the same idea because almost every item that could possibly be used as a display was sold!

Amazing how even in the antique world, certain things are "in". I have seen so many signs composed of these letters, especially lined with lights. Well, if it's your thing, try to contain yourself... they were everywhere. My favorite area was near Cole farm in an area that looks like horse stalls.

Leaving our home of Brooklyn to move to Austin was a decision we did not take lightly. I love my new home but sometimes I miss NY, especially Brooklyn, so much it hurts! Right now I can honestly say I have the best of both worlds. I get to live in (as my Mom calls it) The Great State of Texas and still come to New York for work. When I was here, I got to the point where I dreaded working in fashion. Now, I get to do the best part during market which is working with beautiful products and fun (sometimes not so fun) clients. So with that said, I am enjoying every little bit of NY for 1 more week. At Alexander Wang, market has been crazy busy but I have still managed to squeeze in a few of my favorite things. See you soon Austin!

Jute Doily Inspired Rug

I am a woman on a mission, I must find this rug!!! A few weeks ago I was surfing the web and come across a beauty similar to the one in the image above. I found it directly from the designer's site. Like an idiot I did not use my beloved evernote app to clip the screen for future reference. Now I'm going crazy trying to find it. After searching and searching, I came across this amazing picture on designsponge. It was from a sneak peak of Nina Gotlieb.

These rugs were made by Roost and are no longer available. What a bummer.

The rugs that I am searching for were not by Roost but I can't seem to find them. If anyone knows a good resource for these, let me know! I have a real urge for 70's inspired elements in the crib right now. I need these rugs in my life.

Pratt Sculpture Garden

About 6 months ago we moved from Brooklyn to Austin. In our old hood, Clinton Hill, we had the pleasure of having access to Pratt Sculpture Garden which is something pretty special.

It's funny how you take things for granted. We used to walk past this garden regularly when out and about and at the time, I'm not sure if I appreciated how unique it really is. On my recent trip to NY I couldn't wait to get over to Pratt to sit, have a coffee, and admire the work.

This sculpture really stirs something within me. I guess it is left to interpretation but to me, it's a little creepy.

Some time ago, a variation of this sculpture could be seen in the Richard Meier building at Grand Army Plaza in Prospect Heights. In this building, you could see the silhouette of the monks in a dark material with a neon 'Welcome' sign over head. Again, very cool, but a little creepy.

Rattan

I can't help it, I just have a thing for Rattan furniture. This guy caught my attention last season at the NYIGF gift show and then, lookie here, it was featured in NY Magazine. Something about Rattan furniture captures quintessential Bohemian style.

Is it just me or does the Roost chair remind you a wee bit of a Franco Albini piece? Our beloved Albini stool was a score that we found in the "famous for antiques" Adamstown, PA.

This image is a bit grainy but I think you get the point. Domino Magazine shows how one couple perfectly balances Modern with a little bit of Bohemian. The stark white walls, Saarinen tulip chairs and high gloss credenza are contrasted with just enough natural material in the wood floors and a perfect pop from the Albini Chair. Of course the Josef Frank fabric doesn't hurt.

Pigeon Toe Ceramics

One of my favorite finds this season at NYIGF was Pigeon Toe Ceramics. The collection is beautifully hand made by a small group of artisans in Portland, OR. We are so excited to launch Nannie Inez with a selection of lovely items from their collection.

They define their products as Heirlooms for the Modern Home. I totally agree.

How sweet are these garden lights.

I really have a thing right now for hanging planters and my FAVORITE piece from their collection is the hanging kitchen fruit bowls.

Hillarious List

When my cousin sent me this picture of her daughter's grocery list, I couldn't help but post. This might be the cutest thing I have ever seen. No, not because it is written in crayon and not because of the misspelled words but because there was one extra item that this little girl added in all on her own. She carefully noted everything her mother needed with one extra bit.... Snow Crab. "Maybe if I just sneak this in the middle, she will think this was on tonight's dinner menu". I love it.

Summer Isn't Over Just Yet

It never fails, every summer around this time I start looking for ways to extend those summer feelings. This becomes difficult as the temperature begins to change and the sun takes on that golden hue. I find one of the best ways to hold on to that feeling is to keep some beach and summer objects in my home. As the seasons change, these art works by Jeff Canham are perfect. Jeff's use of natural materials, beachy colors, and hand painted details fill me with memories of sun and fun long after summer has ended.

So You Are Saying the Anklet is Back?

This article in T magazine makes me so happy. So you're saying the anklet is back for Spring 12?? How about we jump on that now. When I was in India recently I couldn't help but wear one however when I returned home it seemed a bit ridiculous. How could you not feel feminine wearing this subtle piece of jewelry. I love how they have paired this anklet with a simple bohemian K. Jacques sandal (find them here.) The Irene Neuwirth piece pictured above is a bit out of my range but I would be just as happy with this sweet little number from Poupette NYC.

Guess what, it's on sale at Shopbop.com. It's a thin string with very delicate silver beads and a feminine clasp. OK, so maybe my jingle bells anklet is still a little over the top but this understated piece of jewelry is perfect. NY Times, I'm in!

At Home, My New Favorite Space

We moved into our new place about 4 months ago and slowly we are settling in. After years of living with beautiful hardwood floors, I hate the carpet but I do love the space and natural light. There is a funny curved wall near the entrance and we have finally figured out a way to use this space. It uses my favorite vintage Milo Baughman piece and a collection of art and personal travel photos. I actually bought the settee for Nannie Inez store but now I don't think we can part ways.

I really love how my Numero Uno put this grouping together. The Crying Baby painting was found by his mother over 30 years ago at a flea market in Spain and we love it. We found the smaller piece while in Asheville recently by Sanjay Sood at Mystic Marsala Gallery. The photos were taken on our recent trip to India and Thailand. On the left is Taj Mahal and right is the absolutely stunning Emerald Pool in Krabi.

This Chair Has New Life, Thanks to Spruce.

I have big dreams when it comes to refinishing vintage pieces. There is nothing I love more than seeing a good DIY project. The only problem, for me, is taking the project from start to finish. Oh I have plenty of pieces from estate sales or ebay but I am embarrassed to admit that I waste money each month paying to store them!! So recently my Numero Uno decided he needed a creative outlet and turned to Spruce for their BYOC class. He had the chance to learn a new craft and we gained a fun new chair. Spruce offers the most amazing selection of fabrics and the work they do is absolutely top notch. But better yet, for weeks after his class all I heard about was how everyone at Spruce is super cool, friendly and fun.

A HUGE thank you to Spruce. His experience re-upholstering our Tub Chair can be found at the link below. But better yet for those who cannot attend the class in Austin, Spruce offers the BYOC class on video!

My project was to freshen-up this vintage (used), reclaimed (ebay purchase) cane tub chair with a vibrant print selected by my lady and me. I attended the two-day intensive BYOC (that’s bring your own chair) upholstery class at the Spruce Redesign Studio in my new home, Austin, TX. Now if you have not yet visited their studio, I suggest you take a trip to their shop on N Lamar Blvd and experience their offering of furniture, fabrics, and do it yourself workshops. I thought two days was way too much time, so my only concern was what would I do with all of the left over time once I finish early. I was very wrong.

The class was led by Spruce owner Amanda Brown, and Clar Mapes. These two are talented and skilled, without being condescending or intimidating, traits, which sometimes go hand in hand see Stevenson Birtch Craftsmen video

Once the pleasantries were out of the way, we jumped in headfirst and I quickly realized that I would not be finishing early.

The first step was to strip your furniture, which basically required me to remove the existing fabric from my chair. Depending on how staple happy the chair manufacturer was, this is by far the most labor-intensive step of the entire process. Unfortunately, my chair required about an hour of staple removal. Once that was completed, I was looking for a cold beer, but I thought it might not go over well with the class, considering it was only 11 AM and we still had a full day of work with hand tools.

After removing the fabric and existing foam in the seat, you have to reinforce the seat with webbing and burlap. This adds life and comfort to your chair.

The next step was to cut the foam and attach it along with Dacron to your seat. A little note, when determining the thickness in your seat foam it is important that gaps are not visible between your seat and the seat back.

At the end of day one, I finally reached the money stage…..fabric time! Here you measure and cut your fabric. We chose 'Miami' in color Atomic (appropriate) by The Design Connection available at Spruce. You might have heard this before, but it can never be over emphasized, measure twice and cut once. Fabric is expensive, and the every mis snip is like cutting greenbacks, and although this is project is meant to be fun, part of the reason you are doing it yourself is to save money. This marked the final task of day one, and a good place to begin the next class.

I entered class on day two feeling a mix of humility and anticipation at the new chair that was slowly coming to life. After a quick demonstration from Amanda on attaching my fabric to the seat, carefully avoiding visible pleats around the edges and curves, I was ready to staple my fabric and dust cover.

With the seat complete, all that was left was to burlap the chair back and add my new foam. This required a light spray of the foam and fabric spray adhesive. This stuff is powerful so tuck your shirt in and pull your hair back, to avoid any unwanted additions to your project.

This step requires a little bit of fine craftsmanship, but adds a professional finish to your piece. Using a hot glue gun, you attach piping along seat base and around the back. Take it slow, because that last thing you want after all that hard work is chair spotted with dried glue. This step requires a sewing machine so Spruce kindly sewed these pieces for us.

The I only thing I expected from this workshop was a lovely little chair for my bedroom, but in the end I had an opportunity to spend two days with some talented folks, and I might have just picked up my favorite new hobby. As with all good journeys, wisdom begins at the end.

Banksy

In London we discovered the work of Banksy, but you would have to have your head in the sand not to notice his work. He is a national treasure. Not like Will and Kate or even objects like the letterbox or black taxi rather his artwork shines a light on darker side of life. He is known not only for his satirical art and graffiti but also his political activism.

A few of his pieces make you cringe as you are not sure whether to laugh or hang your head in shame. Case in point being the 2 overweight American tourist being pulled in a cart by a tiny boy. They enjoy their "experience" while the husband snaps a photo with his cell phone. Ouch, and a little close to home. Dare I say "Not True!" that would be a lie.

Or how about Banksy take on police brutality.

The spastic tag tote is awesome. This could only be reviled the the spoof on Anya Hindmarch "I am not a plastic bag tote" that comically states "I am not a smug twat".

Imogene+Willie

Imogene+Willie is an amazing independent custom denim shop in Nashville, TN. developed by husband and wife Matt and Carrie Eddmenson. The creativity coming out of this gas station turned retail/production outlet is something special. There is an independent spirit at Imogene+Willie that can only be fostered by owners that quite simply put, care... a lot.

Working in the fashion industry, I have seen great stores in every major city and I would rank Imogene+Willie at the very top. For a team to truly grasps their brand identity and hold fast to that in every facet of their business is unique. I would describe Imogene+Willie with words like Americana, understated, comfortable, high quality, longevity. When you visit Imogene+Willie you feel like you are at home. The atmosphere is unpretentious, warm and friendly.

Now, about those jeans. The selection of ready made jeans is not overwhelming and a friendly staff member (feels like family member) is there to help you find the right fit. There are no silly bells and whistles, just the perfect jean that you go back to on a daily basis. The jeans are custom made or tailored on site, literally in the shop space. The ceiling is covered with hanging paper patterns and bolsters of fabric are stacked around the work area. A small team is cutting, sewing and steaming while you shop. Just mind the sewing machine while you step into the fitting room.

I'm sad not to have access to a store like this on a regular basis, but really Nashville and Imogene+Willie are a match made in heaven. I look forward to visiting both again one day.

just a side note: While living in London, I once told my Mom (in Texas) that I loved the English name Imogen. She looks at me like I was crazy and says, "are you sayin I-moe-jean". Imogen and Imogene have a special place in my heart.

Vintage Pillows

This picture has been hanging on my inspiration board for years. From the first time I laid eyes on this room by Wary Meyer in Domino magazine, I have been in love. There are so many elements that make my heart go pitter-patter but its the pillows that really get me. The color is saturated and the texture is bold. They look great here but you could also tone it down and add dimension to a neutral piece as well. Check out these pillows from fellow Austinite, August Morgan. August Morgan pillows are rich in color and pattern. They are playful and nostalgic. They make me want to find my old Rainbow Bright dolls and play Shutes and Latters.

Metropolis

One of my favorite finds at ICFF this season was the Metropolis collection from Lladro Atelier. Llandro is a heritage Spanish design house that creates precious porcelain figurines. Recently, Lladro has launched a design conscious collection called Lladro Atelier with the help of renowned whimsical designer Jaime Hayon. Metropolis is a fantasy collection of vases, lamps, mirror and boxes revolving around the concept of a futuristic city. The colors are a perfect chalky pastel and the surface texture juxtaposes geometrics and lace like detail.

Metropolis reminds me of an art deco Gotham City heavily influenced by the Moorish Architecture of Hayon's homeland of Spain.

With India recently on the brain, I thought of the Metropolis collection because I love a modern interpretation of Islamic architecture. These objects are from a totally different origin than my previous posts but the elaborate nature of their surface reminds me of something like a Jali screen that you might see at Agra Fort.

Goodies from Jaipur

I was a kid in a candy store while visiting Jaipur. Everything is so ornate and colorful. Jaipur is the home of Block Printing and the city is also well known for jewelry and stones. Here are a few of my favorite things from Jaipur.

How sweet is this umbrella! It is hand embroidered and the opulent color makes me want to scream I love it so much! You could find these for sale along the streets in Jaipur varying in size from small to large garden brollies.

Of the bedding that made it home with me, this might be my favorite. It is silk brocade and the jewel tones change shade depending on the light.

The design of this necklace reminds of a South American tribal motif mixed with a little Missoni! It is a style that you will see in most cities around India and they vary greatly depending on the quality of stones.

The coverlet shown is handmade by traditional block printing. The cotton is light enough for a warm summer night and is super super soft.

I wish that I had pictures of the place where these were made. The shop was in a nondescript building with a work room on the side. The shop was about 1000 sq feet of floor to ceiling textiles: block printed cottons, embroideries, brocades, pashminas, bulk fabric and clothing. The floors were covered in beautiful rugs and as you sit and sip chai tea the staff would unfold items for your viewing. It was hard to control myself not to rummage through these beauties. In the work room outside of the shop, you could see artisans block printing cotton and the actual wooden blocks were randomly scattered about.

This picture was actually taken in Thailand at a detox and yoga retreat, but that's a different post. The necklace is smoky topaz and you can see the facets in the stones even in this dark photo.

Visiting India and returning without pillows or a pashmina would be a crime.

This simple silver and enamel bracelet is designed with a repeat of hand painted elephants.

Herman Miller Get Real Video

I have to admit that unfortunately I have fallen for a knockoff piece of furniture over eBay. When I received the piece, I swore that I would educate myself and it would never happen again! This video produced by Herman Miller in response to the influx of designer imitations is very well done. The point is very obvious without being too preachy. Mistakes can happen but with a little effort, you can tell the difference between quality and knockoff. I love the comparison between the bowl of cranberries and canned jiggly cranberry "sauce".

Hand Made in India

I initially saw this West Elm video on Style Swoon about the technique behind Block Printing. Wow, did it take me right back to India. The video is so beautifully done that I can literally smell the chai tea. It got me thinking about a recent trip where I spent 3 months traveling through India. One of my favorite cities was Jaipur the pink city, which I am almost certain is the focus of the video from West Elm. Northern India, particularly Rajasthan was everything I imagined India would be. The color, sound, people, food, chaos, it was sensory overload.

I mention this trip because it was the starting point for Nannie Inez, good living. I had been working in the fashion industry for over 8 years and was incredibly burned out. I had thought about changing my career for a few years so before we moved home from London, I decided to travel around India and submerse myself in my other love, Yoga and Ayurvda. What I discovered was that yes, I do love Yoga and Ayurveda but I can't imagine my life without working with beautiful products. I can't imagine not saying the words, "OMG this is so beautiful I could cry" on a regular basis! Isn't it funny how things work out? Sometimes you think you have a plan and then something else hits you over the head.

Jaipur City Palace

India is creatively very inspiring, the architecture, handicrafts, textiles, jewelry, furniture and even Hindi Music. I felt like I was going to explode with excitement. In India I said, "OMG I love this so much I could cry" every day! This is how the idea of Nannie Inez, good living first came to be. I knew without a doubt that I wanted to search high and low for interesting, beautiful things to share with our local market and most importantly I wanted to tell the story of the designer and how the products are made. As much as I love modern design, I've never met a curved archway, bold ethnic print or carved deity that didn't make me go gaga. I would like to share my trip to India and some of it's creative inspiration. The images in the post were taken in Jaipur.

The people were so warm and friendly. While visiting the City Palace, Indian tourist would approach us to say, Welcome to India and shake our hand. A few people even wanted to take their picture with us. At one point we were sitting in the plaza at the City Palace while my numero uno did a bit a sketching and just a few minutes later there was a small crowd standing over his shoulder to see what he was drawing! It was so cute.

Amber Fort

After a long day of sight seeing, we drove up to Tiger Fort for sunset. It was so beautiful. The city lights twinkled and you could hear the calls to prayer ringing from the below. Our driver suggested we take a short cut home so in the dark we drove in a rickshaw down the side of a mountain with too many hair pin curves to count. I have never been so terrified but we trusted that he had done this before! At the bottom of the mountain he says, "very good, I wanted to try this route". It was a first for the three of us! I hope my mother doesn't read this.

Vintage Outdoor Furniture

Each day I spend a bit of time online cruising through pages on Etsy. I found these vintage pieces from Fabulousmess and I love them! Made by Arcon in 1972, they are super mod and would be cool mixed with a minimalist outdoor space. Then I happened to notice that my favorite Etsy seller Fabulousmess is based in Austin... Say What? Austin, you grow on me more and more everyday.

A Small Retreat

With the idea of finding a weekend spot, I couldn't help but think of one of the coolest small spaces I have ever seen. And you know what, it's right here in in Texas! I originally saw this cutie on Dwell

This container turned guesthouse/garden retreat is the creation of Stacey Hill with the help of architect Jim Poteet. It is tiny but with floor to ceiling windows and beautiful lush garden, it is a little piece of heaven in San Antonio, TX. The container has all creature comforts like heating and AC, a shower, sink and even a composting toilet. The green roof not only helps cool the container but adds a burst of color with flowering plants. This place is perfect.

A Weekend Getaway In Texas

So now that we are in Austin we are trying to find a getaway place within easy driving distance, with access to the water and relaxed clean environment. Where do you go? I know that life in Austin and/or Texas is pretty easy so you might not be in such a rush to flee the city on the weekends. But wouldn't it still be nice to be away from home with family and friends doing low key things like cooking and swimming at the beach? So Port Aransas here we come. I saw this picture of Mustang Island I couldn't believe it. This weekend I hope to find out for myself if a beach like this does exist in Texas.

Visual Acoustics, a documentary covering the life and work of Julius Shulman is an absolute feast for the eyes! The photo of Case Study house 22 is so iconic that it has to be put in the ranks of the Rising Flag at Iwo Jima! Julius Shulman's archive is composed of over 8,000 photographs of the countries most iconic Modern Architecture, particularly that of Southern California. Shulman who you come to know through the film is so full of life that his energy is infectious. The work of famed architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Richad Neutra, John Lautner and Frank Gehry are brought to life through 2D medium and forever encapsulated in history.

Modern Outdoor Seating from Bend

I recently saw this cool little number in the June issue of Dwell. I have to say, they just might give my beloved Acapulco chairs a run for their money. Bend Seating is the creation of Gaurav Nanda based in Los Angeles by way of Detriot. The design is inspired by the architecture of an Amish Barn, hence the name Farmhouse Chair. It's available in 3 colors: White, Black and Red. Personally I am a lover of color so, Red for me please! I think I will take the blue seat cushion as well.

What happens when you take 2 Farmhouse Chairs and add in a Drum Ottoman? You have the perfect setting for an afternoon mojito.

I love the graphic lines on the Ethel Chair. This guy would be perfect indoors at a breakfast table, writing desk or vanity.

I swear it's not the setting, the Bunny Chair is cool with or without a view.

Asheville, NC is amazing, but let's keep a lid on it.

On our road trip from Brooklyn to Austin we stopped in Asheville, NC and I cannot say enough about this town. I get the feeling that residents of Asheville know exactly what kind of gem they have and they try their damnedest to keep the word from getting out. I believe this town is one of the best kept secrets in America. It is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains and when you are there you feel totally disconnected from the world yet not missing a thing. I first heard about Asheville while searching for classes on Ayurveda. In Asheville, really? Yep, go into the mountains and find medicinal herbs... yes please. Then, while in India, I met an Italian girl at an ashram (yeah, gave it a shot but that's another post) and on her first trip to America, she went straight to Asheville! I needed to find out about this hippie dippy place.

But the hippie dippy aspect is only part of it. It is an absolute treasure trove of Art Deco Architecture. Pre-Great Depression, Asheville was booming and after the financial collapse, the city was left with the highest per capita debt in the country. The city made a commitment to pay back every cent of their debt and they didn't creep out of the red until 1977!! Now that is a commitment! Meanwhile while the rest of the country was building strip malls 1930's Asheville was architecturally frozen in time.

I mean, they have a real shopping arcade. I felt like I was in London's Burlington Arcade.

The Grove Park Inn was a favorite of F. Scott Fitzgerald.

More downtown Asheville and Blue Ridge Mountain hike.

The shops are filled with art galleries and cute restaurants. Slow Food movement is huge there and every shop tout's local this local that. Better yet, there is a big live music scene and apparently it is the kind of place where you might see your favorite artist playing to a crowd of 50.

We had breakfast at this little place Early Girl Eatery, 8 Wall St. They serve the tasty southern dishes made with organic and local ingredients.

Get it, Flat Iron?

We spent one day around downtown and the next day hiking in Blue Ridge Mountains.

Big Red Sun is an Austin institution. It is my personal opinion that BRS has greatly contributed to the overall image of Austin. As a city Austin just wouldn't be the same without desert like succulent landscaping, bold blossoming bougainvilleas or the use of mid century screen blocks. Without Big Red Sun landscaping, would San Jose Hotel still feel like the kind of place where a writer goes to work on their novel? But that's what beautiful landscaping does right? It takes a great setting and makes it even better.

I know that Big Red Sun retail store closed for a hot minute during their relocation but please, never leave us again. New location: 1311 E. Cesear Chavez at Navasota St.

A few years ago I worked for Paul Smith where I was first introduced to the work of Rob Ryan. (ps, Paul Smith is absolutely NOT the horrible boss mentioned in the previous post... lovely man but that's a different story). At the time Rob Ryan would collaborate with Paul and his sweet prints and messages would be used on T shirts. It wasn't until I moved to London and was submersed in British design that I really came to appreciate his work. Everything about English design is whimsical with a sense of humor, playful. When I look at Rob Ryan's work it makes me happy. I have no idea, none, not one idea how he manages to make these intricately cut paper works. Mr. Ryan, I know this process is time consuming, but please won't you sell a few pieces to Nannie Inez?

Letting go and gaining a something cool.

So there is a movie debuting soon called Horrible Boss. We've all had one of those right? Well at least I have. Some time back I worked for someone that made my skin crawl BUT in their office lay something I thought was so cool. It was this little Strut number from Blue Dot.

It is the perfect shade of glossy watermelon. How could you tire of excel sheets and expense reports working here? But how could I love something that I associate with someone so deplorable? Well, I ran across this desk recently and decided that I'm reclaiming my vision of the perfect work space. My Blue Dot Desk and I are working happily into the sunset, free of a Horrible Boss.

ABC Ethos

One day when I grow up, I dream of owning one of these Rugs from ABC carpet. I have seen this over-dyed technique from other designers but none are as fabulous as Ethos, Aquasilk, and Color Reform from ABC. The carpets are SUPER soft and the color is so vibrant. I love that the color changes depending on the angle. For now I will lust after these images but, One Day...

Austin, I love you... BUT I really really miss a good noodle bar and I have not been able to find this here. I was in NYC for market and had the same thing, Shrimp Wonton Soba Noodles, 3 times in 1 week! If anyone has a suggestion for a good Noodle Bar (soba, udon, ramen) in Austin, please I beg you, let me know! But until then, if you find yourself in the West Village on Carmine and Bleeker go here.

I have always been a huge fan of Stella McCartney. Spring 2012 collection is amazing and the presentation was so much fun! It was set in a beautiful garden with lovely models highlighting some key details from the collection like Hawaiian prints, bold stripe, optical bows and her famous masculine yet so feminine point of view. The collection is playful and you could sense that with pinata games, pretzel truck and Pims!
